The Square Neckline Is Back In Vogue

It’s hip to be square these days thanks to the comeback of the square neckline!  This flattering silhouette which stems from the Renaissance era has been revitalized to bring a touch of modern romance to our wardrobes.   The square neckline emerged last summer (2019) as the It girl’s go-to neckline and it looks like this trend has staying power.  Brands like Vince, Derek Lam 10 Crosby, Zimmerman and many more are providing an array of colors and prints in tops and dresses to make this silhouette work for everyone.

Here’s what you need to know about a square neckline:

-They are flattering, elegant and versatile.

-The square neckline is perfect for those who have a square jawline as it follows and enhances a square and rectangle face shape.

-As it is a lower neckline it helps to elongate a shorter neck and also widen narrow shoulders.

-It’s also a great option for busty women keen to avoid necklines that create a matronly ‘shelf’ effect or leave you feeling overexposed. The crisp, angular design forms a sharp line that highlights your natural shape while maintaining coverage (see my photo below for an example).

-The collarbone and décolletage is one of the few areas women find universally attractive, and the square neck will accentuate and show it off.

-Because it forms a horizontal line above the bust, it’s good for balancing wider hips.

-For slim women or those with a smaller bust, a fitted square neck can help create the illusion of curves, drawing the eye and emphasizing the bustline.

-The lower neckline allows you to showcase a shorter necklace.
